We have had a week of sympathy, solemnity, and solace over the 59 dead and hundreds wounded in Las Vegas. It’s time for action on gun violence in America. According to the CDC America suffered 36,252 gun-related deaths in 2015, an 8% increase over 2014. That’s 99 deaths every day in America.* Ohio suffered nearly 1400 gun related deaths, an increase of 15% over 2014.
There are hints that Congress may do something about “bump stocks” and that’s good, but that will do nothing to stem the daily onslaught of suicides, murders, and unintentional shootings.
If anything significant is going to happen, it has to begin in the states. And the Las Vegas shooting has many Americans talking again about common sense background checks, because background checks can have a real impact on gun violence and because the overwhelming majority of Americans supports them.
We believe now – more than ever – is the time for action. Now is the time to save innocent lives and improve the health of our communities through responsible, commonsense gun safety restrictions. Experts agree, one of the best ways to save lives and prevent injuries from guns is to close the loopholes in the national background-check law.
That’s why we’re here. Ohioans for Gun Safety is a grassroots organization committed to engaging Ohioans in a conversation about common sense background checks for gun safety. We exist because we know our legislators won’t pass laws to ensure responsible gun ownership. That’s why we need your support – to help us pass a ballot initiative in the state of Ohio to close the background check loopholes.
What can you do?
-Become a groundbreaker. Show our opponents you are a promoter of responsible gun safety. Groundbreakers know that listening to and talking with Ohioans is the critical first step in formulating ballot language to take to voters for approval.
-Host a house party. Spread the word to raise awareness of our work and support our ongoing efforts.
–Donate. Initial funds have been raised solely by small donors. Every amount helps!
